HAAst is rejecting my license file due to a hardware change. The haast.log file contains lines similar to:
[/color]What is going on?
Something significant has changed in regards to the computer’s hardware profile. If you are attempting to move your license to a new hardware platform please contact support@telium.io for assistance.
If you are not moving your license to another hardware platform and have not changed the hardware in any way then something else has gone wrong and we’re here to help. This symptom has been reported with HAAst installed in a virtual machine and the VM has undergone a virtual hardware revision upgrade. Similarly, if you have modified various BIOS settings your system might report hardware differently.
As a workaround restart the HAAst service, or restart the virtual machine guest. Please generate a new license request and send it, along with a haast log file showing your failed restart attempt (including the license rejection messages), and we will generate a new key for you and help you figure out what changed (so long as the system still has a maintenance agreement in place).
Please note that physical and virtual machines do not just change their configurations on their own – so be careful you don’t invalidate your license by experimenting with hardware or VM settings. Activate your license only after you have finished configuring your hardware.
I changed the network card to a faster one. Why would HAAst care? Do you really need this activation stuff?
HAAst uses “activation”, exactly as Microsoft Windows does. If you change your network card in Windows then Windows will operate in non-activated mode. You have to reactivate your Windows installation with Microsoft by phone or online in order to reactivate your license. Like Windows, HAAst detects the change and switches back to the Free Edition. Once you reactivate it returns to the commercial edition.
We face the same problem as Microsoft or any other software vendor: piracy. So unfortunately activation is necessary. But, we are looking at an online licensing system so that you can move your license around (so long as your PBX has an internet connection). Many emergency call centers will not allow a dependence on the internet to permit their systems to operate, so for them we will always offer an activation license file.
Please ensure you only activate HAAst once your hardware platform is finalized (this includes virtualized hardware). Most customers won’t need to reactivate an installation unless something fails (which might happen every few years, and we’re happy to reactive for you). If you need to reactivate every few months then you are doing something wrong!
Most people don’t realize that if you change the hardware (motherboard, network card, etc) in your desktop computer that Windows switches back to unactivated/unlicenced mode. AfterI replaced the motherboard in my desktop Microsoft actually told me that I had to buy a whole new Windows 7 license (because my Windows 7 OEM product was locked to the motherboard). Sadly this is where the software industry has gone; I understand the need for it, but I don’t like.
When I moved HAAst new a new server it too switched to unactivated/unlicensed mode. I emailed the folks at HAAst who sent me a new license file. So don’t worry – its painless. (Unless you are dealing with Microsoft, which is always painful).
I think painfulness of activation/licensing really comes down to the attitude of the vendor. My experience with the folks at HAAst has always been great.
Please note that in mid-2018 Telium is launching an updated license option, which no longer requires activation or ties your installation to your hardware. You will have several license options available at the time of generating your license request.
See http://telium.io/activation for activation options.
